Forty five regional Carnival groups have benefited from Government subventions, totalling $4.5 million. Minister of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Marlene Mc Donald, who presented the cheques yesterday, urged the groups to use the money wisely. The cheque distribution exercise was held at the Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, Adult Education Centre at La Fantasie, St Ann’s.
Saying that Government was issuing public funds at a time where the world had been experiencing a global crisis, Mc Donald called on the groups to “accurately account for their spending.” “You have a legitimate obligation to effectively manage and accurately account for funds received and this obligation cannot be ignored, especially where public funds are being used during a global economic crisis,” Mc Donald said.
Praising the talents of modern mas makers, Mc Donald called on designers to maintain the traditional elements of Carnival. “In addition to the glitter and splendour, the traditional characterisation of the mas must be kept, which is in keeping with Government’s vision 2020 of developing innovative people,” Mc Donald said. She said there ought to be evidence of continuous growth, which would set an even higher standard for Carnival 2010.
Chaguanas gets $125,000
Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West Jack Warner, who attended the function, said the Chaguanas Carnival Committee received $125,000 yesterday. He said the projected expenses of the organisation were $600,000. “Last year, expenses were $800,000. The money will help to make Carnival more successful than last year,” Warner said.
